Yesterday I got a call to buy a Harbor Frieght ladder rack I bought years ago and never installed. Weirdly, I got a second call from another person who wanted to buy it literally like three minutes later. This after it being listed on Craigslist for weeks. The first caller got here first, paid me my asking price in cash, and asked what else I might have for sale.

I rattled off a few tools I was selling, and he mentioned he was looking for a truck tool box. Well, I happened to have a crappy aluminum Husky tool box with a broken latch next to my garage. A friend gave it to me to get it out of his garage, after another friend gave it to him. I’ve been using it to store fire wood. He offered me $50 for it, which he also paid in cash.

This morning I noticed his beater ‘88 Chevy truck pissed oil all over my driveway. I’d be mad if my driveway wasn’t in desperate need of being sealed anyways.

Meh, it’s a driveway. It gets driven on, wrenched in etc. I’d be happy to live with it $50 and a little space richer.

Gasoline - will wash it away and kill your weeds. No worries, you will be ok.

My parents had a paver driveway installed for a princely sum, and it’s still covered in Cherokee rust bits and engine break-in soot. Mom is not happy, and dad is still building stuff to provide more stains on the driveway.

Wow, I guess gas is powerful then cause that has never happened to me?! That or his driveway was made in 1948 and there is nothing left.

Gas will not dissolve his asphalt, lol.

OK, come over to our house, look at our driveway, let me tell you the circumstances and then you can lol all you want.

Yes, gas is powerful. We fill our lawnmower on the concrete now...

I had a friend with an old Polo who would always park in front of my parents’ house, despite being repeatedly told not to do so. My dad made me crush kitty litter into the oil stains with a rubber hammer, let it soak for a few hours and then power wash it off. It worked, but after I had done that twice I would just yell at him to get his piece of ...... off our property.

Well just because you have peeked my interests, I will drive home tonight and LOL myself to oblivion as I pour gas on my street.

Sorry you are scarred by gasoline.

When I was 16 my Ford Ranger’s gas tank sprung a leak and proceeded to relieve itself of about 10 gallons (just filled it) of Sunoco’s finest onto our week-old freshly-paved driveway. It ate a hole about 1' wide all the way down to the gravel base. To make matters worse, we live about 30 miles from the closest asphalt plant, so paved driveways are rather expensive. We got it fixed, but you could always tell where it was patched. i was never allowed to park in the driveway again until i went to college.

Still worlds better than being murdered though, which is how most Craigslist transactions I’ve been a part of go wrong. Well, I mean wrong for the other person, I’m fine.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, concrete’s good. Besides cracking.

Asphalt... it’s porous and petroleum based to start with. Pour some gas on it, leave it overnight (or maybe a couple days depending on the condition of the asphalt—if it’s newer it might hold up better, dunno) and it’ll do stuff for you. Heck, even carb cleaner messed with ours. There’s a reason gas stations use concrete by the pumps. Makes me wonder how many potholes started as gas leaks...

And I like gas, but I prefer it to be running through an engine :)

i think the only thing that saved me from being murdered was the fact that it wasn’t leaking when i parked it. the seam on the tank burst some time overnight.

The current engine in my ‘64 C10 leaks oil like a bastard. And it runs so rich gas leaks down past the worn rings and mixes with the oil, which thins it out and makes it leak more.

Whenever I use it to pickup my latest craigslist find, I park on the street until I get express permission from the seller to be in their driveway.

I figure Valdezing their driveway is a bad way to start a business transaction.

Yeah, a morning full of those will alter your expectations.

I’ve sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist, and I really don’t have any horror stories. Some people are annoying as fock, and I’ve had my fair share of no-shows and whatnot, but nothing remarkable. This guy was super nice. Perhaps not the sharpest spoon in the shed, but really nice.

That’s brutal. The only thing that would’ve saved me from being murdered, is my first POS car was a hand-me-down that my dad made me buy from him ... so it would’ve been kinda his fault too :)

The funny thing is, and I left this out of the story for brevity, he actually came over twice. First he came over and bought the ladder rack, and he parked in one spot of the driveway. We then negotiated the sale of the toolbox, and he left to go find a currency exchange to get more cash. When he came back, he parked in a different spot. All the oil was under the second spot, so I wonder if the truck had just then started leaking. That poor truck was BEAT!

You and I are just running with this thread....

My buddy did an oil change in his Audi S5 and then left it in my driveway the day after. When we came home his catch pan decided to let loose of all that he missed. I had a 3 foot pool descending down my concrete driveway.

I normally use brake cleaner but this one was too much - gasoline to the rescue.

I completely follow you on the asphalt destruction though. I am going to go home and try it.

Technically, this was a hand me down as well. He bought the truck new in 87. two years into ownership, he got a company car so this became an extra vehicle, just for going to the dump or the lumberyard. So when i got my license, he gave me the truck. it was 6 years old, had only 40k miles on it, and looked practically new. Only problem was, it spent the last 4 years parked on grass. so while the paint was mint, the underside was a rotten mess. Within 6 months of being driven daily, i had to replace all the brakes, tires, exhaust (including cat), shocks, brake lines, fuel lines and gas tank. the bedsides used to flap in the breeze on the highway because the braces had rusted out.

I only had one creepy one. Turned up at a guys house, dark street, dark night, no one else around, and he walks into the dark alley beside his house and just beckoned me to follow. Ahh no thanks pal.

Probably worst of all, the seat he eventually returned with had cigarette burns and was a waste of time.

I bought a ‘66 GTO a number of years ago. The seller expressly forbade me from starting it in the driveway because it would dump oil everywhere (not that the street in front of his house was much better). It was a good excuse to do a 5-speed swap after I bought it, though.

Dang, I wasn’t to try it!

I got home Thursday after work and my furnace gave up the ghost the second I walked in the door. I had to take it apart and seek out parts. It ruined my whole weekend and I didn’t even mow. So, I didn’t break out the gas.

I will not forget!!!
